Fran Burns is a horse owner, lover and advocate. She owns a horse boarding barn in Monkton, Md. She owns 3 off track thoroughbreds one of which was adopted from Angel Acres Horse Haven Resuce as well as a shetland pony, a Quarter horse boarder and a Morgan pony. She grew up riding and showing horses as a child and is a full time volunteer at Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue.
In 2006 she assisted with the care as a "hay angel" for the Sharpsburg horses who were seized by the Humane Society of Washington County, MD. (Barbara Reinken vs. State of Maryland) With support from her community and Maureen Haley hay and other greatly needed supplies were trailered into Hagerstown, 1 1/2 hours away from Monkton via 10 trailers.
In addition to fundraising and helping to raise awareness of the plight of throughbreds she works hard to assist in equine neglect and abuse cases in her community. She continues to raise awareness of horse slaughter at every opportunity.
Her horse, Dustin's Dreamer, who was slaughterbound, shows successfully today in hunter shows in the Baltimore County Horse Show Association. You can see his story here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiJ5YOVeM50 His "blue ribbon fund" continues to raise money to save other slaughterbound horses and publicize the plight of thoroughbreds whose racing careers have ended and the horrors of horse slaughter.
